Please Ignore MLSRumors.com
A blog post on a not-well-respected site called MLSRumors.com today suggested that the Austin Aztex and Rochester Rhinos are considering moving to Division 3 next year, in response to the Division 2 standards recently announced by USSF.
As you might guess from a site with “rumors” in its name, and which deals mostly in headlines with question marks at the end, they should be ignored. They’re trolling for page-views, and I’m not going to contribute by linking to them. (You can Google them easily enough, though I assure you: you’re not missing anything.)
Neither I nor anyone I know has heard the slightest hints of anything like this. Further, a fellow Aztex fan (thanks, Jeff!) sent me this statement, which he received from Aztex CEO Djorn Buchholz:
“I can assure you that the rumors you heard on MLSRumors.com are just that, rumors. This club has no intention of playing D3 soccer. Yes, the new D2 standards are quite strict, but our ownership group has assisted US Soccer in setting those guidelines and we meet them. I do appreciate your email and rest assured, we will play D2 Soccer for years to come.”
Update: Brian Quarstad at Inside Minnesota Soccer has more on this: Quelling Rumors – A USSF D2 Update. He adds a statement from Rochester Rhinos owner Rob Clark, and he has a good summary of what kind of shape all the teams, current as well as possible future, look like.

That’s assuming there IS a D2 in which to play. It takes seven others (six + Rochester) and they’re not there yet.
That said, yes, you should always ignore that particular site.

Thanks for this. Good to clear the air. This whole thing kind of came out of left field all of a sudden. I knew their source couldn’t have been credible since they even DM’d me on twitter only saying that the source is “reliable”, even after I asked them where they got the info.

Hey. Next time just email Austin Aztex CEO or other management and get to the truth. I did and I was surprised that they responded so quickly. It seems the Aztex will communicate freely their intentions. I was put off by MLSRumors.com’s false assumptions that Austin was being demoted. It didn’t seem right. You know Phil has alot of pull within the league. MLS would be lucky to have him as an owner, net worth aside, because of his relationship with Stoke. I believe Phil did have influence in making these new standards because he wanted to play in a real D2 league and run like its English D2 league counterpart. The USSF did good with these standards and I hope the city of Austin will help the Aztex in getting a soccer specific stadium within 3 years. Go Aztex. Looking forward to some colder weather games in the playoffs.

I second that. I quit reading them a long time ago. The amount of shit you have to go through for the occasional piece of silver (not even gold or diamond-in-the-rough) is just not worth it.

MLSRumors is a joke. I stop reading that awful website many years ago and my brain cells thanks me for that.

I am glad to hear the truth. The Aztex organization is the. I played for the Austin Lone Stars years ago and I always had the feeling that Austin could support a good club that treats it supporters and players right. The Aztex are open and seem willing to talk to all.

For the record, I refuse to even print the name of that site. I just refer to them as a rumor site. They love the negative attention as much as the positive attention because it means hits to the site which sells ads.
As stated on my site, why would anyone read a website where there is no one person who is willing to stand up, let everyone know who they are and hold themselves accountable for whatever they write.

It’s a good point, not printing the name of the site. Especially because Feedburner seems to automatically hyperlink site names in the RSS feed and emails it sends. So even though I didn’t mean to link to them, I did anyway. Have to think of something more indirect if I need to mention them again. Maybe, “rhymes with MLS tumors dot com”…
